All of this could be applied to Toronto.

The name of this blog comes from a quote from the Canadian Prime Minister Wilfrid Laurier. "Canada is free and freedom is its nationality." This blog is meant to contribute to the philosophical and political movement towards greater personal responsibility and freedom.

Nope.. never happen. Payyyyyyy????? Me?????? What about the pooorrrrrrr????? It should be freeeeeee!!!!
It's the mantra of the Torontian. Remember when the 407 was being planned? Remember the discussion about making one lane of the DVP toll? You'd think the world was coming to an end if the good people of Toronto had to put out any cash to travel.
I pay for roads through my taxes, especially the gas tax. If you want to add tolls to the freeways, then take the gas tax and all road taxes out of the price of fuel. That is the only fair way. I don't drive to work because I choose to. I drive to work because I have to. I will not pay twice for something I am already paying for.
@Mark: you are not fully paying for it if it's partially funded by your taxes and by tolls.

What do you mean I am not paying for it if it is paid through my taxes? How else are roads paid for. That is part of our society's deal. I pay taxes and get services that are for the common good, including highways and freeways. If that is not part of the deal anymore than the portion of my taxes that go towards roads and road maintenance needs to be removed as well as the gas taxes that go to road maintenance. Tolls are an unnecessary burden on drivers that need to drive to get to their jobs and contribute to the economy.
Mark,
What I think he meant was that you are not paying the full MARKET price of using the roads. In many ways driving is one of the most subsidized ways to get to work.
I agree with you however, if we did move to a more market based usage of roadways the tax system would have to be changed.
