It clearly makes a difference between the Conservatives and the "coalition"

The federal government has “found” $1 billion in the 2008 budget that has not been spent. The money was designated for a crown corporation that conducts P3 (Public-Private Partnership) projects. This has launched a political debate on what should be done with this “extra” money.

In opposition the Conservative Party was pretty firm on what should be done with surpluses. Either it should go, they said, to paying debt or it should be returned to taxpayers in the form of a tax cut. Given that the Conservative government is in deficit I expect that this money would be drawn into general revenue to make the return to surplus that much easier.

Surely the government wouldn’t be proposing to spend this money? New spending at a time when the country’s finances are in a rocky position is the sort of thing that I would expect from the evil coalition. The Liberal-Socialist-Separatist axis of evil would have used this money in a cynical attempt to buy votes with taxpayer money.

That is why I am glad that a “Conservative” government is in power.

Personally I think it would be scandalous if the Conservatives "spend" this money. What's at stake here as far as I'm concerned is the corruption of the rules that regulate legitimate uses for this money. If they will so blatantly reinterpret rules for political purposes then they can no longer be trusted. They really will have become the new "Natural Governing Party", up to the same sort of deceit as previous incarnations. Canadians work too hard with too little to show for it to be treated with such contempt by our "leaders".

If you're in debt, always pay it down: interest payments will be lower and shorter.

It might be as beneficial as a tax cut.

pay down the debt.

In this instance (correct me if I wrong) they could technically claim that part of the stimulus and could still use it to that end but I don't think they will.

I suspect they'll instead put it towards the debt. As they have done before.

If they were able to use it in the form of a tax cut that would be handy. A proper form of "stimulus".

Read a bus stop ad on the way home claiming that some "senior citizens will have to sell their walkers to pay for corporate tax cuts." Or some such garbage.... and low & behold all the accompanying graffiti agreed.

Sounded like an NDP talking point.
Naturally. Blame "evil" job-creating corporations! Apparently Canada doesn't need high paying head office jobs. I don't think that worries the NDP types as that isn't their "voter base". Much less run many businesses.

actually in Canada small businesses are the ones who create jobs. Where are the small business incentives?

I run one and there is pretty much squat.
