Open letter to Conservative Party supporters

Hey there Conservative Party supporters. Remember two years ago when the government brought in the ‘stimulus’ package? At the time many of you insisted to me that this was temporary spending. You applauded the shrewdness of the Prime Minister for increasing the budget in a way that will make it easy to go back into surplus later.

Usually when we had these talks I expressed my doubt that it will be that simple. Always at least one of you would give me condescending smile and say something along the line of, “It’s budgeted that way, trust me.”

Well a little while back Jim Flaherty came out with his schedule for getting the country back into the black. It was a little longer than you supporters had assured me it would take, but I understand that you were merely being optimistic. Regardless here was the Minister of Finance saying that we will be out of deficit by 2015 (a ‘mere’ 'temporary' budget deficit of 6 years).

Then Mr. Flaherty indicated that the deadline was more flexible than we first thought. Does this mean he is open to the idea of extending the deadline? Yes, but hey! He is also open to bringing forward the deadline. We could possibly be out of deficit even earlier!

Now Mr. Flaherty is “rethinking” planned cuts in next year’s budget. The economy is still not perfect you see, government needs to be active you see, and [fill in other lame excuse] you see. It is pretty clear that the government has no intention of making cuts anytime soon.

So that means that there is absolutely no way that the 2015 target will be reached. This supposedly temporary deficit is looking pretty permanent to me.

Now let me ask you, Conservative Party supporters. At what point do you stop making excuses for the government and look at its record. Is this the government you wanted when you voted and volunteered in 2006?

Makes perfect sense.

The government has no money of its own.

So it takes the money from someone to give to someone else. For this service it takes a small cut for itself.

In the end we are all richer because they did this??

I too was very concerned about the Conservatives giving in on stimulus spending and moving into deficit territory. It all comes from that saying, "Give a mouse a cookie, he'll want a glass of milk."

I think Conservative Party supporters need to kick their ass and tell them that fiscal irresponsibility isn't an option.

We don,t need no kick in the ass surecure. You and your attitude sure do though. The country is not out of the woods yet,re: the recession. We rode it out better than most countries, but that does not or never meant that we did not need stimulus money. If it takes a few years longer so what??Look at the big picture.WE DO NOT HAVE CORRUPTION IN THE GOVERNMENT ANYMORE.Can you whiners not get that through your thick skulls or are you closet Liberals. We do not want to have the stench and rot of the Liberal party near our finances ever again.Flaherty is doing a great job and is doing exactly what he can in a minority position. You want better??find me better, don't just talk better. This kind of BS talk about PM Harper belongs on the Liberal corruption blogs ,not here.

Bertie,

You can't claim that we needed the stimulus because Keynes is wrong and such policies do not actually work.

And how can you call me a closet Liberal? I'm not the one supporting the most overspending government since Trudeau.

No your not, your just whining about a fact that is out of anyones control. You either live with the Conservatives under an honest government or the corruption of the Liberals..TAKE YOUR CHOICE.You do not have any other choice and you no it. You can say you wont vote and big deal you wont be missed..You can vote NDP that would really help you.OR you can vote LIBERAL or CONSERVATIVE..Who are you siding with?????I am voting CONSERVATIVE no matter what because PM Harper is an honest man,he cares for Canadians and their values, and he does not follow,HE IS THE LEADER.So go with the losers or start writing some of the great stuff that the Conservatives accomplished and the media would not print.Or perhaps you are so wise you could take over for Flaherty and do a better job.And who in hell is Keynes. And ask the 100,s of thousands of people who still have jobs if the government is overspending.Just mentioning Trudeau's spending orgy in the same sentence with spending during a recession shows how much brains you have.

And who in hell is Keynes. LOL

If you don't know who he is than you have no business in this conversation at all. You just take it on faith that stimulus actually works. You need to educate you self on the different economic schools before you can discus this intelligently.

Don,t need any education from the likes of you Kevin. You are in the same position saying the stimulus doesn't work.Ask the 100,s of thousands of people who are still employed because of the stimulus Kevin. And Keynes is no better than our resident bug doctor Suzuki.Don,t put your trust in the words of one wise man.I would suggest to you that you need to educate yourself on the difference of someone trying to make a name for himself by fighting Flaherty.Well i would trust Flaherty and PM Harper any day over the likes of Keynes. You sound like one of the old red conservatives who is not up to speed on the changes in politics and finance.Go see Iggy,he will educate you.
