Ontario announces happy hour ban (CBC Archives)

In 1984, the puritanical Ontario government banned happy hour. Thanks to an anonymous commenter in a recent post for the link to this video from the CBC archives. Why is this silly law still on the books? This should be an easy issue for all the provincial parties to agree on. I hope someone proposes this and gets it done.

I must be old, I can remember those days. The argument then was that it led to people drinking and driving during the day as happy hour tended to be during the early afternoon. It was a topic of discussion where I worked at the time because we had a number of people on the road as part of their job. Looking back it appears to have been heavy handed and invasive on several levels. (real conservative)

I was born, but I don't remember those days so I can't say what Ontario was like. However, when I travel there is happy hour basically everywhere and I really don't see any issues. Drunk driving can happen regardless of the prices.

The happy hour ban in Ontario was on booze but not on the food. Where I am now, in the US happy hour 4pm to 6 or 7pm is usually 2 for one drinks and specials on the appetizers which often are a meal in itself.

You can park for free, go to happy hour for dinner, and attend the NHL hockey game for $70 per person. Last year it was $55.00 each. Inflation hits us all.
