The Globe and Mail is reporting on a survey that shows that 76% of polled economists think that the long-form census should remain mandatory. An interesting number to be sure, but unfortunately the survey is completely unreliable.
You see, no one threatened anyone with fines or confinement to fill out this survey. If no one was under physical threat than how can we possibly trust the results?
I call upon the government to institute a mandatory survey of economists and their opinion on the census. It is only then that we will get to the truth of the matter.

Even if it were accurate all it would prove is that 76% of economists are petty tyrants.
Taking 20 minutes to fill out a form once every few years is no big imposition on a person's freedom. It's certainly less trouble than jury duty, which is also mandatory. With citizenship comes duty.
If they want to get rid of some fascist laws make marijuana legal and tax it. That way the government would make money instead of wasting money on the "war on crime" -- which Harper is ironically importing to the country at the same time he's claiming the census is wrong on libertarian grounds.

Wow.
Naked Ape shows us the inside of a brain soaked with THC.
If there's a reason not to legalize marijuana legal - he's it. I'd hate to see my kids have access to a drug that destroys ones ability to reason so effectively.
"Taking 20 minutes to fill out a form once every few years is no big imposition on a person's freedom."
That's for the individual to decide, not you, and not the government. The individual is the ultimate authority on the usage of their own time.
"With citizenship comes duty."
You have this backwards. It's the government that has a duty to it's citizens, not the other way around. It's the government that is subordinate to the citizen. The citizens' to duty is only to other citizens by not violating their individual rights and respecting their autonomy.
The globe poll like everything at that newspaper is a scam. It should have asked the following: should Canada scrap the manditory census long form if comparable if not more accurate data can be sourced elsewhere by the government at less cost? Now that is a question. (real conservative)

Liberal logic 101...on display.
Liberals can't/won't trust "non-mandatory" polling...
but will trumpet(swear validity) for a "voluntary" poll that supports the cause, like the economists poll mentioned above.
Liberal logic needs exposure and ridicule at every opportunity.!
Naked Ape: No, it's not a large imposition. But it is an imposition, and all impositions need to be justifiable. This one isn't.
@DaveR: Give me a break. I don't smoke marijuana ― which is a much less harmful drug than alcohol ― but I do defend the rights of people to make their own choice. Conservative are certainly being hypocritical harping on a 20 minute census that comes around once every few years, and taking away people's freedom every day.
Obviously conservatives are nanny state when it suites them and libertarian when it suits them. One has to wonder what the conservative-soaked brain activity is behind that one. It sure isn't based on logic or reason.
BTW, kids should not be taking any kinds of drugs: whether alcohol, marijuana or high-caffeine energy drinks.

@potato: I don't think people are being bothered very much with the census. Like Kennedy said, "Don't ask what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country." People have duties to work and pay taxes. In America, the land of the free, people faced conscription until 1973. If our freedoms are great and our duties are little, then we are doing pretty good. Why should we get everything but pay nothing back in return?

@Anonymous: It's been a long-standing tradition in many countries to take a census ― dating back to the time of King David ― which includes America who in 1970 made the census mandatory (according to Wiki on Census.)
The census gives everyone the facts so political policy can be debated based on the correct information. Without it we are flying blind, which is certainly Ok for ideologues who don't care if the facts get in the way of their predetermined agenda.
Maybe you can come up with some reasons why a mandatory census is too much to ask for.

I think the Jedi Knights might disagree.
Again, it's up to the individual to decide. If the government needs this information or if it needs revenue to supply services then it's up to them to find ways of getting it without trampling on our inherent rights. Our "duties", if these exist at all, are to our families, to the responsibilities we incur through free will, and to respecting the rights and freedoms of our fellow citizens.
